At the start of the winter I sat down and started planning what I need to work on for the 2015 season. We had a month off when the season finished last year to rest up and let the body recover after a long season. I reported back to NCCC at the beginning of November, where I started doing strength, conditioning and core-stability exercises.
About mid-November I started working across all the aspects of my game: batting, bowling and fielding, working on technical drills to get ready for the season. I did a lot of one-hand and two-hand batting drills which went well. As for bowling, I did trampoline work for my back foot contact that's hopefully going to prevent my back leg from collapsing. Alongside this I was bowling off a couple of steps and doing some walk-throughs. I've also been working on bowling a slightly fuller length than I have done in the past, which has been challenging.
Although it doesn't always come naturally to me, I feel that what I'm building on will make me a better bowler. Before Christmas we had a few sessions where we bowled at the batters and the ball came out really well. That, and the way that I have batted, has helped to increase my confidence. I was really happy with the way that I went about my business going into the Christmas break.
After Christmas I reported back to NCCC once again for higher intensity training as we closed in on the start of the season. As we drew closer to the cricket season I started thinking about what Newbery equipment I want to use this year, keeping a very close eye on both the website and Instagram for the new products. I have to say that both the Kudos 2 and Panache look stunning, but I ended up going with the latter. I'm always happy with Newbery because they have looked after me really well in the past and this year, as always, their kit is exceptionally good. It's nice to have a sponsor that you can trust, knowing that you will get your kit on time and knowing that it is always going to be top-quality ensures peace of mind at quite an exciting and frenetic time.
Check back throughout the season for more updates from Maurice and our other Newbery Pros.
