Meet the Newbery Pros - Sam Northeast, Kent County Cricket Club March 25 2015
Kent County Cricket Club Vice-Captain Sam Northeast is one of our newest Newbery Pros. His technical and mental qualities marked him out from an early age and he was made Kent vice-captain at the start of the 2014 season, making four first-class hundreds over the course of last summer along with plentiful runs in the T20 and 50-over formats.
This winter our new addition spent his time in Australia, playing his cricket for the Sunshine Coast in the Brisbane league. Over the past six months Sam has worked hard on his skill levels and felt match practice was the best method for his game to improve. He was proved right as he averaged 60 in his time Down Under, scoring two hundreds and a 90 with his Kudos2.
Sam said, “As soon as I stepped off the plane in Australia, I was asked to captain the side and it was a great experience for me personally, but disappointment for the team as we just missed out on the finals.
“I am now looking forward to getting stuck into my work here, and focusing on my vice-captaincy role with Kent CCC. This is a big season for me and the team, so hopefully I can push on, score some runs and help Kent to have a successful season.”
Before Sam jetted-off, he went down to the factory to meet the master bat-maker and talk about how he wanted his bats.
“It was quite a surreal experience to be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect. Shortly after I spoke with him and told him what I liked, he grabbed a cleft right off the pile and hand crafted my bat right in front of me. It was amazing to see the master craftsman at work.”
Sam will be using the Kudos2 and Kudos range as Kent hunt for trophies this summer and is relishing every opportunity to use his his new kit.
“I’ve really enjoyed using the gear. Newbery has kept the tradition and heritage it is renowned for, but has now added a modern feel to all aspects of the brand. You wont find better bats that these, they always deliver quality. I have really loved the vibe and the direction the company is moving in and I’m proud to be a part of it. I would urge people to buy the kit and try it out for yourself.”
