Newbery Pros in The Times' Team of the Week

No fewer than four Newbery Pros feature in the Times’ County Championship team of the round this week.

The team is compiled from the nominations of Times writers Mark Baldwin, Neville Scott and Paul Edwards and, in a week that was heavily affected by rain, Newbery Pros shone through with notable performances for their counties.

Sam Northeast Invicta

Kent Cricket captain Sam Northeast receives deserved recognition for his spectacular career-best knock of 189 against Gloucestershire at Canterbury. Sam’s been getting to grips with his new bat, the Invicta, and his recent form suggests a perfect marriage of bat and batsman.

Homegrown Sussex seamer – and erstwhile Newbery staff member – Lewis Hatchett marked his first appearance of the campaign with five for 58 against Derbyshire. After a frustrating injury hit season last term, Lewis looks set to have a big influence on Sussex’s promotion drive as they look to bounce straight back to Division One of the Specsavers County Championship.

Star of the show for Middlesex was Toby Roland-Jones who, according to the Times, “comprehensively outbowled his team-mate Steven Finn” against Nottinghamshire at Lord’s, with figures of five for 61.

Elsewhere our young leg-spinner Mason Crane just missed out on the Times XI but is given an honorable mention for his three for 116 from 31.2 overs for Hampshire against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

Also featured in the Times XI are:

Sam Robson (Middlesex)

Brett D’Oliveira (Worcestershire)

Luke Procter (Lancashire)

Joe Root (Yorkshire)

Ed Joyce (Sussex)

Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire)

Sam Kerrigan (Lancashire)

Jack Brooks (Yorkshire)
